Taramar is a new Icelandic skincare company that makes organic skincare products made from bio-active marine extracts, seaweed and medicinal herbs.

Research has shown that seaweed contains bio-active compounds that stimulate beneficial responses in the skin and protect live cells from oxidation and aging.

"This started as a hobby, basically because my skin couldn't handle any of the products out there on the market. At the same time, there were a lot of new developments in the research and production of bio-active ingredients," explains Guðrún Marteinsdóttir, professor at the University of Iceland and one of the founders of Taramar who started experimenting with ingredients from Icelandic nature in skin products.

A unique range of skin care products to revitalise cells

"I set a goal of creating new bioactive products which differed from other products in that they should be pure and completely safe. So pure in fact that it wouldn't even be dangerous if a baby drank the bottle by mistake, although of course that's definately not something we would recommend," she says, adding that the Taramar products are so pure and safe that you could in fact, eat them.

"The problem with bio-active products is that they're based on a great number of ingredients, including chemicals that are not ideal for the skin or the body. Products from Taramar are made in the way that they have a visible effect on the skin but the ingredients are completely safe which means that when they are absorbed by the skin and into the blood system they cause no harm."

The seaweed used in Taramar products is harvested from the ocean around Iceland in a sustainable way. The bio-active compounds in seaweed are fragile and break down when exposed to light but the Taramar bottles are made from black glass to ensure long-lasting effectiveness.
