Reykjavik Culture Night celebrates the anniversary of the city of Reykjavik. It's Iceland's largest celebration, attracting crowds of over 100 thousand people to the capital on Saturday meaning that just under one third of the nation participate.

The events on offer are organised both by the city and its various inhabitants. Museums, gardens, streets and squares all host some kind of cultural openings, exhibitions or festivities, and shopkeepers, venues and even private homes also have something on offer!

Starting off with the Reykjavik Marathon tomorrow morning, the Culture Night festivities then start off at around noon, continuing until midnight. The grand finale is a firework display at the harbourfront at 11 pm.

To pick just a few of the highlights, there's a jam-packed musical programme of children's events, jazz performances and classical concerts at Harpa Concert Hall from 14.30 until 8 pm, and in the backyard of Bar 11 on Hverfisgata there's a concert all afternoon featuring new Icelandic stars such as Fufanu, Emmsé Gauti, Gíslí Pálmi, Pink Street Boys and Reykjavikurdætur. The Reykjavik Art Museum at Kjarvalstaðir, in Klambratún park offers an excellent programme for children all day long, and at the Reykjavik Art Museum Hafnarhús by the harbour there's a pop up café offering delicious food in the central courtyard and there are plenty of modern art exhibitions to feast your eyes on. As usual, at Arnarhóll in the city centre there will be a live concert in the evening featuring some of Iceland's best loved bands, also broadcasted live on radio Rás2.

Reykjavik Culture Night also marks the start of the city’s cultural year, when museums and theatres and other cultural institutions launch their annual programme of events. And they do so with a bang, taking the opportunity to introduce and display some of what they are offering for the coming season.

The main objective of Reykjavik Culture Night is to deliver a diverse and rich offering of cultural events. This means that the selection of culture is immense, as you can see here No matter how much of a rocker, or of an art-lover you are, there is plenty to do, see and listen to all day long. The best thing about it – all events are free of charge for everyone to enjoy.
