Wine bar opens in a mysterious shoe shop

Shoe store Bónus skór on central Hverfisgata was legendary for the fact that it was never open. Sonja Magnúsdóttir has now rented this famed location from the elderly gentleman who owns it and will be opening a restaurant and wine bar called Vínil (Vinyl) in August. 

Bónus skór has always been a mystery to locals as it's been there for years and is seemingly never open. How did she solve that mystery? "I simply called up the gentleman who owns the store. It was actually his wife who ran it and she passed away some years ago. He hasn't been very well so he's only kept the store open betwen 11 am and 2 pm on Saturdays, which left customers a window of three hours per week to shop there.  The problem was that he never advertised this fact anywhere so noone knew the opening hours," Magnúsdóttir explains.

She's now renting the facilities and had a clearout sale of the shoes who had been sitting in the store window for years. "My concept is to have a cosy venue there which offers a selection of wine and beer and food that perfectly accompanies wine and beer. We will be serving a selection of sausages, cheese and olives and delicious bruschettas made with the famed sourdough bread from the nearby Sandholt bakery."

Vínill will also be open for breakfast and lunch and as the name suggests, DJ's will be spinning vinyls Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from the time when the happy hour starts at 5 pm to the late evening. Wine and beer prices start at a moderate 900 ISK and happy hour will be daily between 5- 7 pm.
