Ride the Reykjavik Wonder Wagon!
Last Friday saw the maiden journey of ‘Wonder Wagon’, a new quirky and fun cultural bus tour of Reykjavik set up and run by three Icelandic ladies.
Wonder Wagon is the brainchild and labour of love of Eva María Jónsdóttir, Nanna Hlíf Ingvadóttir and Ilmur Stefánsdóttir. On Friday, they transported a group of tourists and locals to a whimsical world of art, poetry and culture – in a converted old green bus. This was the first of four Wonder Wagon tours planned for May.
Quirky décor and mystery guests
The interior of the trio’s retro vehicle is quaintly decked out with crystal chandeliers, scalloped curtains and a grand piano. Setting off the décor are the three tour guides themselves, dressed in bright colours with personalities to match.
Mystery and surprise are the order of the day on a Wonder Wagon tour, from the moment Eva María welcomes passengers on board and the vehicle departs from Harpa Concert Hall.
Icelandic music and treats
The next ninety minutes will feature all manner of unexpected events and mystery guests. As the Wonder Wagon makes its way around Reykjavik, Nanna entertains the passengers at the piano – accompanied by Dísa on the viola – with traditional Icelandic songs.
Passengers are regaled with poetry readings and stories and treated to artistic treasures and doughnuts and coffee.
The Wonder Wagon will be operating for the next three Fridays in May. No two trips are the same, according to the Wonder Wagon ladies, and the mystery guests will be different from week to week.
