The uber hip Kex Hostel in Reykjavík are organising a celebration of 26 years of beer freedom starting tomorrow. Beer was not sold in Iceland until March 1st 1989. Until then it was thought that alcohol consumption in Iceland would rise if the sale of beer was allowed.

The hostel and sister travel agency Kexland are inviting people to get to know the best of the Icelandic beer trade with several breweries taking part. A few North American and Danish breweries are also taking part. The Kex restaurant, Sæmundur í sparifötunum has conjured up a special menu for the duration of the festival and local breweries will introduce their products and methods.

The schedule:

Thursday, February 26: 5:00-7:00 PM Breakside Brewery, Bruggsmiðjan Kaldi, Ölvisholt Brugghús.

Friday, February 27: 5:00-7:00 PM Hopworks Urban Brewery, Vífilfell, Einstök

Saturday, February 28: 4:00-6:00 PM Mikkeller, To Øl, Ölgerðin, Borg Brugghús.

Sunday, March 1: 4:00-6:00 PM Evil Twin Brewing, Two Roads Brewing Company, Founders Brewing Co., Brugghús Steðja.

Festival and day passes will give you access to the festival where you can taste the festival beers and give you an intimate access to the people behind the beers.
