The vegetarian burger at Hamborgarabúlla Tómasar is the perfect veggie meal on the go. Mbl.is/Árni Sæberg
So you're vegetarian or vegan and craving for something a bit greasy to calm that post-party feeling? Sure, there are several excellent healthfood/vegetarian restaurants in the city but greasy veggie fast-food isn't particularly easy to find. Here are a few reccommendations.
1. The best veggie burger in our opinion is the cheap and delicious offering at Hamborgarabúlla Tómasar (Tommy's burger joint), a popular Icelandic burger joint that now has branches in Berlin, Copenhagen and London. Their veggie burger costs under 1000 ISK and contains a deep-fried vegetable patty with iceberg salad, mayo and gherkins. The fries are also fantastic.
Where? Geirsgata 1 and Bankastræti 5 ( inside B5), 101 Reykjavík.
2. The falafel durum wrap at Mandi.
Syrian-owned Mandi is the latest kebab spot to hit the centre of Reykjavík and is cheap and cheerful. They make delicious kebabs and their falafel is a perfect combination of deep fried falafel with fresh vegetables and yoghurt sauce.
Where? Veltusund 3b, 101 Reykjavik.
3. The veggie burger at Kaffihús Vesturbæjar
The veggie burger at this very hip café in the western part of Reykjavík is vegan and delicious and is garnished with pickled chili. The home-style fries come with optional guacamole for vegans. Yum.
Where? Melhagi 20- 22, 107 Reykjavík
4. The veggie burger at Prikið
Prikið is a bar filled with young hip-hoppers but if you come early you can grab one of their great and greasy burgers. They offer a vegetarian version of generous proportions and very juicy fries.
Where? Bankastræti 12, 101 Reykjavík
5. The Veggie Burger at Íslenski barinn
An omelet with fried vegetables and sweet pepper in a spelt bun accompanied by fries.
Where? Ingólfsstræti 1,101 Reykjavík
