Seventeen restaurants are open this Christmas Eve in Reykjavík offering everything from a kebab to reindeer paté. Some of the finer restaurants are almost fully booked.
Skrúður restaurant at Hótel Radisson SAS Saga is almost fully booked and most reservations are made by international guests. Amongst the dishes on the menu are turkey breast, leg of lamb, hangikjöt and a vegetarian meal.
At MAR in Geirsgata there are only a few tables left and the delicious kebabs at Ali Baba at Ingólfstorg square are available at Christmas eve if that's what you fancy. According to Skapti Örn Ólafsson at the Icelandic tourist board, Christmas is becoming a popular time to visit Iceland although New Year's eve is still more popular. Most Christmas tourists to Iceland stay in Reykjavík.
"A few years ago many hotels were closed over the Christmas holidays. Now hotels are open and so are a lot of restaurants," Ólafsson explains.
Reykjavík was on CNN's list of the most interesting Christmas destinations in the world recently.
