Eruption activity remains stable – Gas pollution spreads widely
Volcanic activity at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row has remained fairly stable overnight. The eruption continues from a single crater, with lava flowing eastward and spreading out across the lava field within 1 km of the crater. Movement at the outer edges of the lava field is minimal or slow.
This is stated in a morning update from the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s Natural Hazards Monitoring Unit. According to the report, gas pollution will drift to the north-northwest in the morning and may be detected in the Reykjanes and Suðurnesjabær areas. As the day progresses, the pollution is expected to shift northward and may be noticed in Vogar, the Capital Area, Borgarnes, and Akranes.
Volcanic haze has been measured in many parts of the country this morning, but with increasing southeasterly winds, it is expected to lessen in many areas throughout the day. Calm weather is forecast for tomorrow, which may cause the haze to become noticeable again.
