A volcanic eruption has begun near the Sundhnúkar crater row — the twelfth eruption since the first one at Mt. Fagradalsfjall in 2021.
The eruption's source is southeast of Litla-Skógfell, in roughly the same area as the crater formed during the eruption last August.
Just before the eruption started, the Icelandic Meteorological Office estimated the length of the magma intrusion at approximately 6.5 kilometers.
The National Commissioner of Police, in cooperation with the Police Commissioner of Suðurnes, has declared a state of emergency in civil protection.
