April 1st eruption lasted only six hours
The April 1st eruption, which began at 9:44 a.m., officially ended at 4:45 pm the same day, making it the shortest eruption in the ongoing Reykjanes Peninsula eruption series that began in March 2021.
This conclusion is based on an analysis by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, using webcam footage, aerial photography, and gas measurements.
Seismic Activity Continues
Although the eruption itself has ended, scientists warn that the event is not over yet. Small earthquakes continue to be detected, particularly north of Mt. Stóra-Skógfell, though seismic activity has noticeably declined over the past 12 hours.
The region remains under close observation, as magma movement could still lead to further activity in the coming days or weeks.
