Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland, gave Kristrún Frostadóttir, the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, a mandate to form a government this morning when they met at Bessastaðir.
“After that conversation, I gave Frostadóttir a mandate to form a government. She has also told me that she is already in active talks with the leaders of other parties, who have also informed me that they are ready for formal talks on forming a new government with the Social Democratic Alliance,” Tómasdóttir told the media after the meeting.
Clear election results
Asked if this had been the clearest option in the situation, Tómasdóttir said that the election results had been clear and that yesterday’s conversations had revealed that this had generally been considered the right step.
"We haven't set a specific deadline, but I think the common notion is that everyone wants to roll up their sleeves and get to work quickly, and I will monitor matters and of course hope that it goes quickly and smoothly."
