"Activity last night was fairly steady to begin with, but at 5 am this morning the volcanic activity decreased and at the same time the visible activity in the central crater, the crater that has been the most active so far, decreased."

This is stated in a statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office's natural disaster warning service.

However, three craters are still active, the southernmost has been the smallest in recent days, but activity in it, as well as in the northernmost crater, appears to be relatively stable.

The central crater has been feeding a lava flow along Mt Stóra-Skógfell, along the defense walls at Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon, so its decreasing activity should result in less lava flow to the defenses in that area.

Gas pollution (SO2) has been measured in Grindavík overnight and this morning.

“We advise people in the area to monitor air quality measurements in real-time on the Environment Agency’s website loftgaedi.is, which also provides information on responding to gas pollution caused by volcanic eruptions.”
