It is assumed that driving into Grindarvíkurbær will be barrier-free and the town will therefore be open to everyone from next October 21. The town is currently in the alert state of uncertainty, which is the lowest level of public safety. This arrangement will be in effect until the danger level can be declared again.

Due to the countermeasures that have been taken and are in progress, Grindavík is considered a safer place than before, and the purpose of increased access is to protect the town and valuable business activities.

This was stated at the information meeting of the executive committee regarding ground disturbances in Grindavíkurbær yesterday.

Supervision carried out within the town

The security center, which has patrolled the closure posts, will carry out security checks within the town instead and will have facilities at the closure posts if a closure has to be resorted to for security reasons. Control of traffic (counting) in and out of the town will be done electronically and it is done for safety purposes in case of an evacuation.

It is noted that residents and visitors stay at their own risk in a danger zone and that everyone is responsible for their own actions and inactions.

Then remember that Grindavík is not a place for children or children to play. There are no plans to resume work in schools, kindergartens or after-school activities.

Provides stronger support for the economy

The purpose of increasing access is to protect the town and its valuable economic activity, although it is too early to tell its long-term future.

Increased access will result in stronger supports for the economy. Although it does not guarantee that all companies and operators will be able to reopen their operations, it should make it easier for those who are able to do so.

Avoid going to open areas

Various countermeasures have been undertaken, many of which are still ongoing. They include, among other things, mapping, land surveying, geodetic measurements and visual inspection. Cracks have also been filled and/or fenced off, and stress tests have been carried out at the repaired locations. Certain danger zones in the town have also been marked separately.

There may still be a risk of landslides in crevices, especially in open areas in and around Grindavík that have not been inspected separately. People are therefore encouraged to stay away from the town's streets and avoid going out into plots and other open areas.

There will also be clear signs when driving into the town, explaining that this is a danger zone and escape routes will be specially marked.
