Össur Skarphéðinsson, former chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance, says that Svandís Svavarsdóttir, chairman of the Left-Green Movement, is responsible for the fact that Bjarni Benediktsson, chairman of the Independence Party and prime minister, has decided to end the coalition government.

This is stated in his post on Facebook.

"Svavarsdóttir created a straightforward plot that consisted of dissolving the government at a convenient time for the Left-Green Movement and then running for elections under the presumption that the Left-Green Movement had overthrown the Independence Party. In this way, she intended to get enough votes from the left wing to save the remaining part of the Left-Green Movement. This was a decent plan in itself and could have saved them from the corner," he writes.

"A rough result for Svavarsdóttir"

"However, it was a total blunder of her to provoke Benediktsson by practically shoving this plan under his nose and declaring together with her Vice-Chairman that the Left-Green Movement was also going to work against the two issues that the Independence Party overemphasizes, the immigration issues and energy issues."

It also appears that Svavarsdóttir's statements forced Benediktsson in practice to take the initiative and terminate the administration before her.

"It was a rough result for Svavarsdóttir. She seems to have been struck with total game blindness because in the situation Benediktsson had no other option but to dissolve the government cooperation. Svavarsdóttir pushed him into that decision. He has the perfect excuse that the statements of the new chairman of the Left-Green Movement simply made her ungovernable - and thus her party," Skarphéðinsson writes.

The scenario does not increase the likelihood that the Left-Green Movement will get a candidate for parliament.

Finally, he wonders if Svavarsdóttir's decision will lead to her becoming the shortest-lived chairman in the history of the Left-Green Movement.

"The chain of events she set in motion does not increase the likelihood that the party will get someone to parliament."

According to the latest support polls, VG has 3.7% support and won't get a seat in parliament.

Skarphéðinsson and Svavarsdóttir sat together in the government from 2009 to 2013 when Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was prime minister.
