Grindavík can be written off for now

"If economic activity starts again in Grindavík, some life could be revived there. For now, however, the town can be written off," says Helgi Einarsson, a former captain in that town.

Einarsson and his wife Bjarghildur Jónsdóttir, like other people from Grindavík, had to start a new life after the town was evacuated last November. They have spent the last few months in their summer house at Hvolsvöllur, but have now bought a property in Selfoss after the real estate company Þórkatla bought their house in Grindavík.

"The mistake Þórkatla made was that during the sale and delivery of property, people had to evacuate their houses. Because of that, I know a lot of people even trashed quite a bit of their belongings, not being in a position to put it anywhere. Of course, there is less chance than otherwise that people will return if the house is empty," says Helgi Einarsson, who believes this is in contradiction to the government's intentions that the town of Grindavík should be restored to its previous state.
