"Everyone is shocked by this terrible event. This should not happen in our society, that a 17-year-old girl dies in this way." This is what Guðrún Inga Sivertsen, the principal of the Commercial College of Iceland, says when asked about the atmosphere in the school following the tragic death of Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir, who died following a stabbing attack in the city center on Culture Night.
"I feel a lot of empathy and solidarity among students and staff," she says, but Bryndís Klara was a student at the school.
Bryndís Klara's favorite color
Students and staff wore pink to school today to remember Bryndís Klara. The school's student association sponsored it, but the reason for the pink color is that Bryndís Klara's childhood friends said in a memorial service in Lindarkirkja church yesterday that her favorite color was pink.
Hugging in the school corridors
"We have worked with the students during this crisis. There was a moment in every class today where the teacher went over this shock and how we can work together with grief and work through it. Students are writing in a memory book, there are candles lit and beautiful flowers in the school. The athmosphere in the school is quiet, but there's an awful lot of affection and solidarity that you see among students and staff. Everyone is showing emotions and both students and staff support each other and hugs can be seen in many places in the corridors of the school."
