An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred in the south-eastern side of Bárðarbunga crater at 2.53 am last night. As a result, there were several smaller earthquakes, but there are no signs of unrest, according to the announcement by the Icelandic Met Office.

The last time there was an earthquake of this magnitude in these areas was on June 30, but according to the Met Office, 15 earthquakes, 3 or larger, have occurred in the area since the beginning of the year. The largest of them was a magnitude 5.4 earthquake on April 21.

"It is the biggest earthquake since the end of the eruption in February 2015. Earthquakes are common in Bárðarbunga," says the announcement.
