Iceland's President Guðni Jóhannesson received 300 guests at Bessastaðir yesterday. This was his last reception during his tenure, which officially ends at midnight.
The guests were workers who have been involved in the construction of defense walls on the Reykjanes Peninsula and the protection of infrastructure there.
Over 80 companies have participated. Jóhannesson thanked the guests for keeping watch over the last few months.
The president’s term ends at midnight
The term of office of Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the outgoing president of Iceland, will officially end at midnight tonight, and then the holders of presidential power, i.e. the President of the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the Alþingi, perform his official duties until the inauguration of Hälla Tómasdóttir as the future president.
The president has called a cabinet meeting in Bessastadir today. There will be a review of legislative proposals from ministers, and he will reaffirm laws that he has previously signed, as is customary. After the meeting, the president will formally bid farewell to the government.
Halla Tómasdóttir will be officially installed tomorrow. The ceremony takes place in The Parliament Alþingi, and the public is invited to Austurvöllur to watch the ceremony and celebrate the new president.
