Long criminal history

Kourani has a long criminal history in Iceland.

His first offence was committed in December 2017, when he was sentenced to 30 days in prison for document violations.

He arrived in Iceland in early 2017 and was granted international protection in the spring of 2018. He has never worked in Iceland for a living, but has received public funds for his living.

He spent 12 months in prison for assault, house-breaking, violation of a restraining order, damage to property, explosion-threat, forgery, weapons-law violation, traffic-law violation and seven violations of the public-health-law. He completed that sentence in January.

“According to the defendant’s criminal record, he was sentenced to 30 days in prison for document violations on December 19, 2017. The defendant was then sentenced in Court of Appeal on March 31, 2023 to 12 months in prison for assault, house-breaking, violation of a a restraining order, damage to property, five violations against the government, two bomb threats, forgery, weapons-law violations, traffic-law violations and seven violations against the law of public health, and this sentence confirmed the district court’s decision on June 16, 2022.

The accused completed the 12 months sentence on January 26, 2024. After that, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison on March 14 for assault, abuse of power, bomb threat, attempted bomb threat and traffic violation. This sentence is subject to appeal before the Icelandic Court of Appeal.”

Convicted for attempted murder

The court also reviews the attack in OK Market in March, where he attacked two men with a knife, but he was convicted of assault and attempted murder.

“The defendant’s offences were committed intentionally and his willingness to do the atrocity was strong and focused when he unfairly and violently acted against victims C and D, causing them considerable bodily damage. The defendant has not shown signs of remorse or regret and has not tried to improve his counsel, but has, on the contrary, continued to commit offences with the conduct for which he is convicted according to the 5th and 6th charges.”
