The lava tongue thickens as inflation continues

Inflation measures at a constant rate in Svartsengi. The lava tongue north of Mt Sýlingarfell, which flows from the volcanic eruption at Mt Sundhnúkur, continues to thicken.

The eruption at the Sundhnúkagígar crater row on May 29 has been going on for over three weeks. One crater just east of Mt Sundhnúkur is continuing to erupt. This is stated in a post on the website of the Icelandic Met Office.

Firemen attempt to cool the lava with water

The lava tongue north of Mt Sýlingarfell continues to thicken, but on Tuesday, June 18, lava spewed from the lava tongue over the northeast-bound defense wall L1, although it did not get far.

There are no plans for cooling the lava down with water at this time.

Unchanged hazard assessment

The risk assessment is unchanged and is valid unchanged until next Tuesday, 25 June.

As in the past few days, the volcanic eruption is continuing at a constant rate in Svartsengi. This can be interpreted as a continuation of the magma flow from the depths and is greater than the flow from the crater and the accumulation of magma under Svartsengi continues as before.

Today, gas from the eruption at Sundhnúkagígar crater row is being carried to the north and northwest towards Reykjanesbær and Vogar.
