No change in the eruption and minimal pollution at present
The eruption in Sundhnúkagígar crater row is steady although seismic activity has decreased. Little to no changes have been seen over the last couple of days.
This is what Lovísa Mjöll Guðmundsdóttir, a natural-hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, says to mbl.is.
When asked if there is any sign of the eruption coming to a halt, she says it’s hard to tell.
“There is a continuing inflation and we need to see what happens, whether it will be like last time or different.”
Minimal eruption pollution now
There is little volcanic pollution in the area at present, but the northwest wind is the most direct route to the sea and the gas pollution goes to the southeast,” say Haraldur Eiríksson meteorologist at the Icelandic Met Office.
He expects this to be the case over the weekend.
“There is a stable northwesterly wind direction, so it’s not crossing land but rather takes the shortest route out to sea.”
