Around 70 earthquakes have been detected in the magma channel at Svartsengi in the last day. The largest earthquake last night measured 1.5 magnitude southwest of Grindavík offshore.

According to Einar Hjörleifsson, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, there is still a small amount of seismic activity in the area, as well as increased inflation measured by the Met Office’s GPS meters.

“This was very similar to the night that we had last night and has been the same for the last few days,” Hjörleifsson says.

Meetings every day at 8 am

Every day, the regional and operational board of Grindavík meets with the Met Office at 8 am where the situation is reviewed.

The Icelandic Met Office updated its hazard assessment yesterday, as it is increasingly likely that a new magma run and another eruption will occur in the coming days. The magma accumulation has grown to 16 million cubic meters.
