Had already decided not to run in parliamentary elections

She says that she has been encouraged by people around the country to run for president.

“I myself had decided a while ago not to run in the next parliamentary elections but I continue to strive to do our society good. Therefore I have decided to ask for a solution as prime minister of Iceland and to run in the upcoming presidential elections,” Jakobsdóttir says in her address.

“This is an important office. The president needs to understand the operations of politics and society. He needs to be able to show leadership and humility. He needs to protect Iceland’s interests internationally. He needs to be able to make difficult decisions regardless of his popularity,” Katrín says in part.

She then announces that she will be touring the country in the coming term and discussing the situation with the people of Iceland.
