“Now what we all hoped would not happen has happened,” President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson said in his address on National TV tonight about the volcanic eruption that began near Grindavík this morning.

“We hope that everything will go as well as possible.”

He said his thoughts were with the loved ones of Lúðvík Pétursson, the man who is missing after a work accident in Grindavík.

He also thanked those who have offered shelter to the Grindvík residents and those who have worked on the scene of the events, as well as scientists.

“When it matters, we stand together.”
