“It will snow somewhere in the country most days, but the most snowfall is at least over for now here in the south and west,” says Óli Þór Árnason, meteorologist at the Icelandic Met Office, about the weather outlook for the next few days.
He says it looks like a big cold day around Iceland on New Year's Day.
The nicest weather in the South
According to Árnason, some snow will fall in both southern and northeastern Iceland tomorrow.
In addition, the Westfjords and Southeast Iceland are expected to have snow fall, while the Westfjords and Faxaflói Bay and Breiðafjörður are expected to have fine weather.
“It will be nice weather in many respects, with a little windy tomorrow morning, but little precipitation and generally the nicest weather.”
Árnason says the snowfall will be mostly confined to the north of Iceland tomorrow. The wind will be strongest in the west of Iceland, but the coldest weather will be in the south. There, the precipitation will be the least and the wind will be the slowest.
Up to fifteen degrees frost
Temperature will remain cold in many parts of Iceland in the next few days, with frost reaching twelve or fifteen degrees.
He says it looks like nice weather on Thursday. Then the wind will begin to drop, but it will also cool down in many parts of Iceland.
“When the wind gets lighter in the country, the frost will increase, so Thursday will be quite cold in the country, and the temperature could drop to minus twelve to fifteen degrees and fifteen to twenty degrees Celcius in the country. It’s very cold.”
Extremely cold on New Year’s Day
According to Árnason, the weather forecast for the New Year has now started to clear up, but it has been variable in the last few days.
“It will probably snow in the south and southeast the first part of New Year’s Day, but the snowfall should be mostly south of the country in the evening. It will be calm weather in many places, but then it will be extremely cold,” he says.
“It looks like New Year’s Eve will be just as some people would call it, damn cold. It will be in many places below ten degrees and we could see figures that go below twenty degrees.”
