Meeting for residents in Reykjanes peninsula in case of a possible eruption

The Public Safety Committee of South-East Iceland, apart from Grindavík, has decided to hold a meeting for residents in Hljómahöll in Reykjanesbær on Wednesday at 20 pm.

Land has continued rising at the same speed as it has been. There are no clear signs of magma moving closer to the surface, but while magma accumulation continues, it is expected that there will be seismic activity in the area.

Kjartan Már Kjartansson, mayor of Reykjanesbær, says the occasion for the meeting is the seismic activity in the Reykjanes peninsula. The purpose of the meeting is to share information and give residents and employers the opportunity to ask questions.

As mbl.is reports, there are serious concerns that the area will be without hot water if a volcanic eruption occurs near Svartsengi, which could result in the discontinuation of the power plant in Svartsengi.

According to Kjartansson, the agenda of the meeting is still being worked out, but the Civil Protection Department, the Icelandic Met Office, HS Orka and HS Veitur have confirmed their arrival as the first speakers. After the statements, all the main information will be translated into Polish.

“Then the participants will have the opportunity to pose questions and the police and possibly other parties will join the group. All suggestions from stakeholders are well-received,” Kjartansson says in the announcement.

Kjartansson will be the meeting manager and plans to stream the meeting online.
