The second biggest earthquake hit at 4 am

An earthquake measuring 4.3 hit between Þorbjörn mountain and the Blue Lagoon around four o’clock last night, the second-largest in the series of earthquakes that began on Reykjanes peninsula earlier this week.

Several reports were received by the Icelandic Met Office that the earthquake was felt acutely in Suðurnes.

Salóme Jórunn Bernharðsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Met Office, says the seismic activity calmed down last night but started again when the 4.3 magnitude earthquake around four o’clock. Another earthquake measuring 3.7 magnitude hit the same area shortly afterwards.

Since then, the seismic activity has been ongoing.

Since the seismic swarm began, more than 5,000 earthquakes have been detected. From midnight, 600 to 700 earthquakes have been detected. Last night, around nine o’clock, one earthquake occurred in the south by Fagradalsfjall mountain.
