Fatal accident at sea at Njarðvík harbour
Two men were taken to the emergency room of Landspítali in Fossvogur last night after the Suðurnes police received a report of a marine casualty outside of the harbour of Njarðvík at 19:39. Two men were in the water.
Responding officers, police, paramedics, Landsbjörg along with the Coast Guard and a helicopter were called in and the men were recovered from the water by 20:11.
One man died at 22:30 last night
In the police announcement the following is reported:
“One person from the accident of the ship last night outside the Njarðvík harbour, a man in his seventies, has died.
He was taken unconscious from the scene by a Coast Guard helicopter to the Emergency Medical Center of Landspítali in Fossvogur after resuscitation attempts. Further resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 22:30 last night at Landspítali in Hringbraut.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been informed of the accident, but according to initial police information, the two men were on board a 5-metre sports boat that later sank. Further information surrounding the accident is not available and the investigation is in its early stages with the police.”
