Police are investigating the death of a man in his fifties. He was found dead in an industrial area in Hafnarfjörður early Saturday morning. The death was reported to police at the sixth hour Saturday  morning.

The deceased man was unconscious outdoors when emergency responders arrived. The man was tried for resuscitation, but this was unsuccessful. Police believed he was killed.

The Reykjanes District Court yesterday ordered a man around forty to be detained until Thursday, on suspicion of having killed the man. First, two men were detained. One of them has now been released, but police only requested to detain one of the men.

“A man of forty years was detained tonight in the District Court of Reykjanes until Thursday, June 22 on the grounds of investigation, according to the interests of the Metropolitan Police in the interests of its investigation of the death of a man in his fifties in Hafnarfjörður last night. Another man, who was also arrested over the case has been released from police custody. No further details of the investigation can be provided at this time,” the notice from the Police reads.

Grímur Grímsson, head of the police’s Central Investigation Unit, confirms this to mbl.is.

The two men arrested are both Polish citizens in their early 20s. One of them was detained until Thursday, while the other was released.

Relationship between the two men

There is a connection between the two men, but when asked who they are, Grímsson would not answer at this time. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported tonight that the man in custody is a co-tenant of the man who was found dead and that it is believed he attacked the man in his bedroom.

Grímsson said the man's death was most likely caused by the use of a weapon most likely a knife, but said an autopsy would need to establish the final cause of death.

“There were injuries to the man that indicate they were inflicted by another person,” Grímsson tells mbl.is, questioning why the man was believed to have been killed.

He tells mbl.is that the investigation is progressing well and that the police have a fairly clear picture of the chain of events.
