A serious car accident occurred at Suðurlandsvegur by Öldulón in Öræfi just east of Fagurhólsmýri today and a call for help was made to the Coast Guard after two o’clock.

Chief Superintendent Oddur Árnason of the South Iceland Police says the circumstances of the accident are still being investigated, but a crash occurred at the Öldulón lagoon when two cars collided coming from opposite directions. Nine people were injured in the crash, but the severity of the injuries is not yet known.

Two helicopters and one plane

“When we got the call, the TF-Sif was not very far from the Coast Guard’s plane and was turned back to go to the crash site as well as two helicopters which were sent off,” Ásgeir Erlendsson, the information officer for the Coast Guard, told mbl.is.

“Nine people in total were taken to Reykjavík, six by the helicopters and three by the TF-Sif,” he says, adding that it is very unusual for three aircrafts operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard to be activated at the same time.

As mentioned earlier, the condition of the wounded is not known, but the planes landed at Landspítali National Hospital in Fossvogur just before six this evening.
