“We’ve canceled all our morning flights, Reykjanesbraut has been closed and that’s just the situation,” Icelandair’s information officer Ásdís Ýr Pétursdóttir tells mbl.is, adding that the situation is now being assessed and the impact this decision will have is being examined.

“We will be in contact with passengers who have booked flights today, which is done by email and text messages,” adds Pétursdóttir.

Birgir Olgeirsson, Play’s information officer, now received information just now that the company had canceled six of its scheduled flights to European destinations in the morning hours. “We just sent an email to the passengers,” Olgeirsson tells mbl.is.

“The weather operations management at Keflavík International Airport was called to a meeting at 20 PM last night. It reviewed the weather forecast at the airport for today with representatives of airlines and service companies working at the airport,” Guðjón Helgason, Isavia’s representative, told mbl.is.

Helgason says, that among other things, the wind forecast for this afternoon was reviewed. The forecast was not positive with the wind getting stronger as a yellow warning remains in effect in the area until tomorrow.

Passengers asked to follow news and forecasts

“The weather management meets every time the forecast is of such a nature that it looks like the weather will have a major impact on the service at Keflavík International Airport. The airlines and service providers are informed and the airlines then make decisions on how to proceed,” Helgason stated.

He says the airport will not be closed, although there can certainly be circumstances that bring difficulties in servicing aircraft. “We therefore ask passengers to keep an eye on the news and weather forecasts and check the information on the Keflavík International Airport website. The airlines update their flight schedule on our website. You can also search for the latest information from the airlines,” Helgason continues.

He also says passengers are encouraged to keep an eye on news of the roads. The difficulty in Reykjanes can affect passengers and staff travelling to and from the airport.
