All flights canceled today
The airlines Play and Icelandair have canceled all flights for the remainder of the day due to extreme weather.
This is confirmed by Birgir Olgeirsson, Play’s information officer, and Ásdís Ýr Pétursdóttir, Icelandair’s information officer, as reported by mbl.is.
The Icelandic Met Office forecasts northeast winds at 15 to 23 meters per second in wind speed for the next 24 hours, with even stronger winds in the southeast, from 20 to 28 meters per second. The forecast is for hailstorms in north and east Iceland, but otherwise dry weather but with flurries of snow. Winds will be reduced late tomorrow according to the forecast.
A meteorologist’s note on the Met Office’s website points out warnings of northeasterly gales or gales in the south and west of Iceland, but windier in the southeast. The meteorologist’s note indicates significant snowfall across the country, and poor visibility in many areas causing problems for drivers.
