Nordic countries, including Iceland, take part in assisting Ukrainians, following Russia’s invasion of their country. Iceland’s support is limited by the fact that we neither have military equipment nor specialized equipment to offer.

Instead, Icelandic authorities decided to offer to transport military equipment to Ukraine on board an Air Atlanta freight aircraft, which Icelandic authorities chartered, Morgunblaðið reports. The aircraft flew with military equipment from Slovenia, in cooperation with Slovenian authorities, to an undisclosed destination near the Ukrainian border the night before last.

That was confirmed by Sveinn H. Guðmarsson, communications director for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He would not reveal what sort of military equipment this involved. When asked if Icelandic authorities plan to transport more military equipment intended for Ukraine, he responds that no decision has been made in that regard.

According to the government website, the operation was successful, and the equipment shipped will be distributed to those in need.

Icelandic authorities have promised to contribute one million Euros toward international humanitarian aid, due to the invasion.

“Icelandic authorities will continue to find ways to assist the Ukrainian nation in a way we can and according to their wishes and needs,” states Minister for Foreign Affairs Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir.
