Iceland has received over €22 million in innovation grants from the European Union (EU) since 2014.

Despite not being a member of the EU, Iceland is a beneficiary of the Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. Horizon 2020 is part of the EU’s “flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness” by means of direct investment in research and innovation.

The programme is managed in Iceland by Rannís, the Icelandic Centre for Research. Since the programme was launched, Icelandic companies, institutions and individuals have received a total of over €22 million (approx. ISK 3.2 billion).

“Allocations from the fund are made on a competitive basis, and these figures show the success achieved by Iceland,” reads a Rannís press release.

“The fund provides cash for research and innovation in Iceland as well as strengthening links between Iceland institutions and agencies and partners abroad.”
