A serious traffic accident occurred on Suðurstrandarvegur, just east of the turnoff to Vigdísarvellir, at around eight o’clock this morning.

According to Eyþór Rúnar Þórarinsson, fire chief of the Suðurnes Fire Brigade, a car overturned on the road, and two people were airlifted by the Coast Guard helicopter to Landspítali hospital in Fossvogur.

He says that it was reported that one person was trapped under the car, but rescue teams managed to free him, and he, along with another individual, was transported by helicopter. Eyþór adds that there was considerable ice on the road in the area where the car overturned.

The website of the Icelandic Road Administration reports that both Krýsuvíkurvegur and Suðurstrandarvegur between Grindavík and the junction with Krýsuvíkurvegur are closed because of the accident.

On the Facebook page of the Suðurnes Police, it is stated that a large group of responders from the Suðurnes Police, Suðurnes Fire Brigade, and the Grindavík Fire Department went to the scene. It is further noted that a scene investigation is underway in cooperation with the technical division of the Capital Area Police.
