Iceland opens new embassy in Spain
Minister for Foreign Affairs ÞorgerðurKatrínGunnarsdóttir is opening a new Icelandic embassy in Spain today.
She announced the news in an op-ed in Morgunblaðið, writing that she intends to spend Iceland’s Sovereignty Day in Madrid, where the embassy will be located. She describes the opening as an important step toward strengthening services for Icelandic citizens and supporting Icelandic business interests abroad. She adds that the decision enjoyed broad political consensus across all parties during the previous parliamentary term.
“Thousands of Icelanders travel to or reside in Spain each year, and Icelandic companies are increasingly entering the Spanish market, including in the fisheries, creative industries, and technology sectors. Additionally, the two countries are close partners in matters of security and defence,” the article states.
“It is no less a part of our sovereignty to safeguard the values we believe in and support nations that share them with us. In doing so, we build toward the future.”
