The road between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón is closed
The main road between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón has been closed due to severe weather. The closure is expected to remain in effect until the evening. A yellow weather alert is in force for Southeast Iceland until 19:00. Snowfall is occurring in the area, with blowing snow in places, and strong northeasterly winds or gale conditions.
Localized wind gusts may exceed 40 m/s, with sustained winds of 15–25 m/s, strongest in Öræfi.
An uncertainty phase is in effect from 10:00 to 19:00 between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, and from 12:00 to 18:00 between Markarfljót and Kirkjubæjarklaustur due to the storm.
Weather around the country
The forecast for today calls for northeasterly winds of 10–18 m/s, increasing to 18–25 m/s in the southeast. Snow or sleet will fall at times, with little precipitation in the west. Temperatures will hover around or below freezing.
Tomorrow, northerly winds of 8–13 m/s are expected, increasing to 13–18 m/s in the east. Snow showers are forecast for North and East Iceland, while other regions will see dry and bright weather. Temperatures will range from –3°C to –8°C in many areas. Winds will gradually ease in the afternoon, precipitation will taper off tomorrow evening, and temperatures will drop further.
