Photos: Yule Cat lights up Lækjartorg for the holidays
The Reykjavík Yule Cat was illuminated this afternoon at Lækjartorg, marking the start of the city’s festive season.
Grýla, Leppalúði, and the Reykjavík Brass Band Svanur entertained guests and passersby during the lighting ceremony.
Standing about five meters tall and six meters wide, the steel-framed cat is illuminated by 6,500 LED lights. It was first installed in 2018 and is the result of a collaboration between Reykjavík City, MK Illumination in Austria, and the Icelandic company Garðlist.
Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, the mayor of Reykjavík, attended the event and delivered a short speech to mark the occasion.
