Minister protests EU safeguard measures
Daði MárKristófersson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, has formally protested the European Union’s proposed safeguard measures on silicon metals, both on behalf of Icelandic stakeholders and the EEA cooperation as a whole.
In his address at a meeting of the EU’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) yesterday, he said:
“We are deeply disappointed to hear of the Commission’s proposal for safeguard measures on silicon metals, which would apply to the EEA and EFTA states if implemented. Applying such measures to EEA countries could undermine our close, reliable cooperation with the European Union.”
Attended Ecofin meeting in Brussels
Kristófersson attended the Ecofin meeting in Brussels alongside finance ministers from other EFTA countries. There, he presented the main findings of an EFTA report submitted to the council, emphasizing the importance of preserving EFTA countries’ access to the EU’s internal market and the mutual benefits of strengthening Europe’s competitiveness.
Yesterday, he also participated in a Nordic meeting of finance and economy ministers, held in Brussels, where discussions focused on the resilience of financial systems and fiscal policy priorities amid changing economic conditions.
