Public now allowed to enter Grindavík
Access to Grindavík has now been opened to the general public, according to a statement from the Suðurnes Police Commissioner.
Business owners in Grindavík had strongly criticized the town’s closure to the public and tourists earlier today, especially while the Blue Lagoon was allowed to remain open.
The statement says the decision was made based on an updated risk assessment, which concludes that the overall risk level for Grindavík and Svartsengi is moderate. The primary risk is now considered to be gas pollution from wildfires and the volcanic eruption.
