Fewer active craters as eruption continues
A natural hazards specialist says it is difficult to assess from webcams how many craters are still erupting. However, the number is somewhat fewer than the ten that were still active yesterday. Árni Sæberg
The eruption on the Sundhnúkur crater row is still ongoing, now having lasted for more than two days.
Activity has gradually decreased, and according to Bjarki Friis, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, several craters near the middle of the initial fissure are still erupting.
Hard to assess via webcams
He says it's difficult to determine the exact number of active craters from live webcams, but there appear to be fewer than the ten that were still active yesterday.
Volcanic tremor continues to decline slowly but steadily, and no seismic activity was recorded in the area overnight, according to Friis.
