Prisoner found dead
The prison at Hólmsheiði where the man was found dead in his cell yesterday morning.
An inmate was found dead in the Hólmsheiði prison yesterday. The Director of Prison and Probation Administration, Páll Winkel, confirmed this to mbl.is.
“We are all heartbroken. A priest and a trauma team were called in, as in all cases when a person dies in prison in this country, ” says Winkel. The inmate was a male. The prison authorities have already contacted his family members.

The cause of death is not yet known, but an investigation is underway with the police. According to Winkel, the man was found dead when the cells were opened yesterday morning.
This is the first death in Hólmsheiði prison since the prison was opened in 2016.
“It’s a blow for everyone, both for inmates and employees,” says Winkel.
