The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management Alert Phase declared due to storms all over Iceland. The Coordination Center for the Department of Civil Protection and Operations Control Centers throughout the country will be activated around and after midnight.

There is a great deal of preparations due to the coming storm all over the country.

Today, the Civil Protection Authorities met again with experts from the Meteorological Office, response parties, responsible parties for electricity, telecommunications and transport. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the civil protection agency’s operations management throughout the country.  

Like yesterday, the weather forecast was reviewed and what preparations need to be taken when the storm strikes. 

There is a high probability of wind damage and impassability within neighborhoods. People are encouraged to secure loose items and contractors are asked to secure construction sites.   

The Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) has decided to close roads due to the weather, you can follow the closures on the Road Administration’s website.

Parents are asked to monitor how schools will operate, some schools have already decided to close tomorrow.  

As has been stated, the Icelandic Meteorological Office has raised its weather warning level to red for the capital area.

Southeasterly winds or gales are forecast, 23-30 m/s with snowfall and snowdrift, with sleet closest to the coast. The wind will be strongest in the upper settlements of the capital area and on Kjalarnes.

The Department of Civil Protection continues to monitor closely and disseminate information to the media about the situation in all parts of the country.
