Two men were arrested over the weekend in connection with shots fired at the office of the Social Democratic Alliance and later at Reykjavík Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson’s car, Morgunblaðið reports. One of the men, who is in his late 50s, has been remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

The mayor believes the car was shot at either Friday or Saturday morning, January 22 or 23, where it was parked by his home in downtown Reykjavík. Bullets were found inside the passenger door of the car after Dagur noticed a hole in the door on Saturday, the 23rd. When asked by RÚV whether this incidence had caused him to consider leaving politics,  he responded that this was not the right time to make such a decision.

“Of course you don’t want to set a precedent by leaving politics if someone threatens you… but of course there are limits to how much you can take this close to home,” he stated.

Dagur believes there is to some extent a global development toward more harshness and less patience when it comes to communication.

It has been alluded to, mbl.is reports, that there may be a connection between the attack on the car and a video, released in December, in which Reykjavík City Council member for the Center Party Vigdís Hauksdóttir is the commentator, where it is claimed that the mayor purchased three parking spots from the city, close to his home, without an invitation to bid. The City of Reykjavík has issued a statement, saying that the mayor has never bought a parking spot from the city.

Last night, entrepreneur Bolli Kristinsson, one of the people listed on the closing credits for the video, apologized on Facebook for this incorrect statement in the video and asked for the video to be removed from the Internet right away.

Vigdís has denied any connection between the video and the shooting incident. “There is no connection between the two cases,” she states, “and those who are familiar with my political work know that I fight against the flight of businesses from downtown.”
