Beware of Swelling Rivers
Heavy rain in recent days has caused rivers and creeks in South and West Iceland to swell. The forecast calls for considerable precipitation in these parts of the country this afternoon. The Icelandic Met Office asks travelers to exercise extreme caution near rivers and creeks.
These conditions increase the likelihood of falling rocks and landslides in steep mountain slopes.
Conditions at Básar , a campground in Þórsmörk, the central highlands, are unfavorable, according to Þóra Björg Ragnarsdóttir, who manages a chalet there. There has been heavy rain in the area since Saturday, and no one should drive there, she advises, except for experienced drivers of lifted 4x4s.
Strong winds are forecast in the northern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula late tomorrow afternoon, with local wind gusts of 30 meters/second, creating hazardous conditions for vehicles susceptible to wind.
