During the month of July, Icelandair transported roughly 73,000 passengers, compared with only 18,494 in June, Morgunblaðið reports. Despite this major increase, there was an 87 percent decrease in passenger numbers in July, compared with the same month last year.

The increase from June to July this year means that the airline’s occupancy rate grew from 50.9 percent in June to 70.3 percent in July.

The increased occupancy rate can be explained, too, by an 89 percent reduction in the airline’s available seat-kilometers – a figure equal to the number of seats available multiplied by the number of kilometers flown.

According to information from Icelandair, the number of passengers who traveled to Iceland with the airline in July was 58,200, whereas only 13,300 passengers left the country during that time.

Icelandair CEO Bogi Nils Bogason states that the airline is constantly reassessing its plans, based on changes in travel restrictions.

“After travel restrictions were lifted in Europe, we expanded our flight schedule considerably for July,” he explained, “although, compared to last year, the decrease is substantial, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
