A new container ship, Dettifoss, was delivered in China yesterday to the Icelandic transportation company Eimskip, Morgunblaðið reports. It is one of two 2,150 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) vessels that the company has had built in China.

These are the largest container vessels in the history of the Icelandic fleet – 180 m in length and 31-m wide. The other ship, Brúarfoss, is expected to be delivered during the third quarter of the year.

The ships’ engines are specially built to lower nitrogen oxide emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, the ships will consume less fuel per container unit than do older vessels, and their scrubber system minimizes sulfur oxide emissions.

The delivery of Dettifoss marks the beginning of a vessel sharing agreement with the Greenlandic carrrier Royal Arctic Line, set to start in June. The cooperation will connect Greenland to Eimskip’s international sailing system.

Employees of Eimskip have been in China recently, preparing to receive Dettifoss. Some of them had to spend 14 days in quarantine, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ship will sail from China to Iceland in early May. First, it will leave Guangzhou for Taicang, China, where cargo to Europe is to be loaded. From there, the ship will sail to Singapore, then to Sri Lanka, after which it will be headed into the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, and finally to Denmark. Once in Denmark, the ship will formally start its service, following Eimskip’s sailing schedule. Dettifoss won’t arrive in Iceland until late June at the earliest.
