Five Icelanders, who were among the first ones in the country to be diagnosed with COVID-19, have fully recovered, mbl.is reports.

This was confirmed by Landspítali Chief of Infectious Disease Már Kristjánsson.

The first case of the virus was confirmed in Iceland February 28.

Right now, the total number of confirmed cases is 250. A total of 6,510 samples have been analyzed, and 2,422 people are in quarantine. Three people are hospitalized. For further details, visit covid.is.

There were reports yesterday that an Australian tourist in his late 30s had died at Húsavík Hospital, North Iceland, shortly after arriving there seriously ill. The cause of death is not known, but the man tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The deceased did, however, not show any symptoms of COVID-19. An autopsy will be performed.

Twenty-two people at Húsavík Hospital were quarantined after having cared for the patient. Some of the people are police officers and paramedics.

To enable the hospital to continue providing essential service, health care workers from Akureyri are helping out. Some of the quarantined employees can work from home. As much service as possible is being provided over the phone, according to Jón Helgi Björnsson, CEO of the Health Care Institution of North Iceland.
