The Icelandic Coast Guard ship Þór, named after the god of thunder (Thor), came to the rescue of the residents of Dalvík, North Iceland, yesterday, bringing them power, mbl.is reports.

The area had been without electricity since a violent storm hit on Tuesday. Up to 20 electricity poles were destroyed in the storm in the nearby valley, Svarfaðardalur, leaving residents in the dark. Workers will begin repairs there today.

Six hours after the ship came to harbor, it was able to produce electricity for all the residents of Dalvík.

Power has now been restored in the towns of Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður, North Iceland, but numerous farms in North Iceland remain without electricity, such as in areas around Ólafsfjörður and Akureyri, as well as in Hörgárdalur and Öxnadalur valleys.

Workers have been toiling day and night, attempting to restore power to the affected communities. You can see the extent of the power outages here, where red dots indicate ongoing repairs.

Many communities in Northeast Iceland receive electricity from auxiliary generators while repairs are underway.

Öxarfjörður and Melrakkaslétta, Northeast Iceland, remain without power.
