No Travel Advised in North and East Iceland

There is snow and blowing snow in the West Fjords, North Iceland and in the East Fjords today. Winter arrived with snow in these areas on Tuesday, several days ahead of schedule, for, officially, the First Day of Winter is not until Saturday, two days from now.

The Icelandic Met Office has issued a yellow winter weather warning for the Strandir region of the West Fjords, Northwest Iceland, Northeast Iceland, East Iceland, the East Fjords and Southeast Iceland.

A blizzard warning is in effect for Northwest Iceland, Northeast Iceland, East Iceland and the East Fjords, effective through the early evening hours.

A northerly gale, with snow and drifting snow is expected. The forecast calls for wind speeds of 13-20 m/sec and continuous snowfall. Limited visibility and difficult driving conditions should be expected. Some roads could become impassable.

A strong gale warning for Southeast Iceland is in effect through noon. Northerly winds of 15-25 m/sec are forecast, along with wind gusts in excess of 40 m/sec. The windiest conditions will be in the eastern part. No precipitation is expected in this area, but you can expect a sand storm and limited visibility in places.

According to safetravel.is, Ring Road 1, from Mývatn Lake to Egilsstaðir, East Iceland, is closed, as is road 85 to Vopnafjörður fjord, Northeast Iceland. No travel is advised in North and Northeast Iceland.
